Observing Memorial Day

FORT WALTON BEACH — Blue skies were overhead during a Memorial Day observance at Beal Memorial Cemetery Monday morning. An estimated 300 people were in attendance.

SRI Management Chief Operations Officer Shelley Kaiser was not only on hand during the ceremony, she helped place flags on the nearly 2,000 final resting places for fallen soldiers.

“The men and woman who serve in the military are truly heroes,” Kaiser said Monday shortly after the ceremony. “And those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in keeping our great country free should be remembered not only each Memorial Day but each and every day.”

Monday’s keynote speaker was Col. John W. Sannes, commander of the Army 7th Special Forces Group – Airborne based at Eglin Air Force Base. His speech had a lasting impression and reiterated Kaiser’s feelings about Memorial Day.

“When Col. Sannes said ‘the fallen are a part of our heritage and will never be forgotten,’ that really rang true with me,” Kaiser said. “He couldn’t be more right, and as long as we continue to honor the fallen, they’ll never be forgotten.”
